Barry

“You know everybody, and everybody knows you.”

Originally from Newfoundland, Barry has been a SHOW tenant for 2 years, having previously lived in a small, one-bedroom apartment.

“I was involved in drugs. My place was just a drop-in centre for dope, and all my dope was free.”

He used to have a problem with hoarding, but SHOW personnel have helped him to deal with that. “I’m able to keep my place pretty clean because I asked them to help me.”

One of the reasons Barry enjoys living here is because of the sense of community in his building. “You know everybody, and everybody knows you.”

“Here, my rent is low,” he added. If his SHOW apartment wasn’t affordable, Barry thinks he’d probably be living on the street. He’s been there before, and he doesn’t think he would be able to do it again. “I just turned 60, and I wouldn’t be able to live on the street no more.”

Barry said the staff at SHOW are good people and good company. “I’ve never had a problem with any of them. At least there’s someone here you can talk to. I don’t know where I’d be if it wasn’t for this place. If you screw up here, you don’t deserve to be here.”

“This is the only place in all of Canada that I know of where I can get this kind of help.”
